WTO / Antigua Stomp Feet, Throw Arms - Bush Sends Both to Corner

Antigua is pissed and they are asking China and Europe for help.

The tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua & Barbuda is escalating its battle with the U.S. over online gambling by trying to convince China and the European Union to support it bid to impose trade sanctions on Washington.

Antigua & Barbuda, home to many gambling Internet sites, said Friday it was talking to China and the E.U. about imposing sanctions on the U.S., which last year stepped up its long campaign against online gambling by passing a law that makes it illegal for financial institutions to process gambling transactions.

A source close to the Antiguan government said China was likely to side with Antigua & Barbuda, in part as a retaliatory measure. The U.S. has frequently turned to the WTO to pressure China to live up to its trade commitments to honor U.S. patents, as well as music, movie, software, and other copyrights.

The E.U. has also historically sided with small nations that have won trade rulings at the WTO.

The WTO in April ruled the U.S. position on online gambling violated the General Agreement on Trades in Services (GATS) treaty (see The Return of Online Wagering?). The WTO said clamping down on offshore Internet sites that accept bets from U.S gamblers amounted to protectionism because it is legal in the U.S. for gamblers to place bets at casinos, horse racing tracks and sports books.

The U.S. then stunned the WTO and the Antiguan government by announcing it would no longer abide by the gambling services segment of the GATS treaty.

“This astounding and unprecedented action by the US opens up a whole new chapter in the WTO jurisprudence, which runs contrary to the object and purpose of the GATS,” Antigua’s minister of finance and the economy, Dr. Errol Cort, said in a statement.

It also left Antigua with the unenviable task of imposing sanctions on the U.S. No doubt that the absence of Antiguas 81,000 consumers exiting the U.S. marketplace is sure to send shivers down the spines of Washington.

Steve Lipscomb has hired some new eye candy for the World Poker Tour. Earlier this week, the WPT announced that Layla Kayleigh will be the new hostess of the Travel Channel show.

Her vast resume includes being an on-air correspondent for Fox Sport’s “Best Damn Sports Show Period” and The Vegas Insider, as well as co-hosting G4’s Attack of the Show and hosting “The Feed” news segment.

Basically she is already worshipped by every four eyed, video game playing geek in the universe and Stevie is using her to attract the geekoids over to poker.... BRILLIANT MOVE!

Calvin's Bodog TV Show Back on the Air

The thing that made Calvin Ayre's Wild Card Poker Show great was the fact that you got to see my handsome mug in the party shots at Calvin's house.

I loved the poker action in the show, but Calvin really likes himself and this show proved it. There are segments of Calvin riding his motorcycle, Calvin excercising, and Calvin giving fashion tips. In between the Calvin bits, there is some poker too.

FYI: This is also the show that was being filmed when Calvin's house was raided by Costa Rican commandos. Several poker pros and Hollywood stars were there and shaken down. It was cool ;)

In case you missed Calvin cruising the dirt roads on his Harley, don't be upset. They are putting it back on the air just for you. Here's their presser...

Bodog TV and ION Television have joined forces once again to air the original Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker TV series. The popular series pits seasoned pros against average Joes, celebrities and a mysterious wild card competitor. Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker will air daily at 10pm / 9pm Central, starting Monday, May 28 and will culminate in a special three hour poker marathon, Saturday, June 2 at 8pm / 7pm Central.

By the way... this pic was taken during a jungle tour the week of the show. Shortly after the photo was taken, Boston Rob got angry with me because I didn't know who he was. His exact words were, "Are you kidding? Everybody knows who I am".

One more note... Bodog is casting right now for their second season of the show. They are taking video submissions as audtition tapes, so dust off the camcorder and start acting a fool. You know the drill, get on TV once and you are greenlighted for writing a series of poker books. After all, everybody knows that you must be the best if you land on a TV show... right?

Wife Indicted After Confessing to Killing Poker Pro Hubby

A woman accused of stabbing her poker player husband to death in an exclusive Las Vegas condominium has been indicted on a murder charge that could get her life in prison ifconvicted.

Forty-nine-year-old Jill Rockcastle is due for arraignment May 31st in the slaying of 44-year-old William Gustafik.

He was a former California chiropractor who became a Las Vegas poker pro under the moniker "The Manipulator." The indictment handed up Wednesday in Clark County District Court accuses Rockcastle of premeditated murder in the slaying -- which was discovered April 13th.

Rockcastle was found unconscious three days later in a motel room in San Luis Obispo, California. Police say she sent confessional e-mails to friends, and left a note in a car for her children and overdosed on medication.

She was hospitalized and later extradited from California to Nevada, where she has been held since May fourth without bail at the Clark County jail.

One More Barney Frank Bandwagon Post...

I just wanted to throw up the beginning of an article that appeared in the Boston Herald earlier this month. The article began with...

"Perhaps the biggest government blunders in U.S. history have been prohibitions.

"The prohibition against alcohol led to black market smuggling and speakeasies, and reaped huge profits for organized crime. Today, the prohibition on Internet gambling promises to funnel players underground, diminishing society’s ability to deal with serious challenges such as underage and problem gambling, and, more importantly, interferes with the right to individual liberty and privacy.

"Rep. Barney Frank’s (D-Mass.) efforts to deal with this outrageous
legislation are heroic. "

One more thing about the article... it appeared in the opinions section of
the paper and was written by Alfonse D’Amato, chairmen of the Poker Players
Alliance.

It's good to see the PPA finally getting some articles into major newspapers' opinion pages, but next time, Mr. D'Amato, leave the theatrics out of it. Calling Barney "heroic" for introducing a Bill about gambling is pathetic.

Support for Barney Frank Bill Breads New Initiative

Riding the coat-tails of support for Barney Frank's Bill to regulate online gambling, a new organization backing the legislation was formed.

A national scheme has been launched in the US to reinforce new legislation introduced by Congressman Barney Frank, that sets out to license and monitor the online gambling industry, in a backlash against 2006’s Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative aims to highlight the importance of a regulated framework that will allow US players to continue to enjoy gaming in the comfort of their own homes. This is in direct contrast to the restrictive nature of the current UIGEA, which makes it illegal for banking facilities to accept money transfers to and from online gambling sites and has essentially halted access to online gambling in America.

The Initiative also hopes to drum up online support for the bill from voters across the country. ‘Millions of Americans are currently gambling online in an unregulated environment without any consumer protections,’ said Jeffrey Sandman, spokesman for the Initiative.

‘Internet gambling is a matter of personal choice and many Americans see the current prohibition as an unnecessary intrusion into their private life. Stringent licensing and regulations will protect American consumers and provide safeguards to protect against underage and compulsive gambling. Representative Frank’s bill is a big step in the right direction to limit government intervention that is futile and heavy handed.’

A WSOP Schedule Hunch

Does anybody know the real reason why the World Series of Poker was moved up a few weeks this year? Personally, I find it a bit coincidental that the WSOP will wrap up just shy of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act's 270 day deadline.

I can't help but think that the folks at Harrahs were a little concerned about the possibility of legendary poker players being handcuffed and paraded out in front of media from around the world. What a PR nightmare that would be! "How do we play it safe", somebody might have asked. Moving up the schedule might be one way!

The UIGEA gave a grace period of 270 days for banks and websites to comply with its new ban on sending money to offshore gaming sites. That grace period will expire in late July. The WSOP's main event is scheduled to commence on July 17th.

Last year the main event's final table was played on August 10th.

Poker and Porn End Anne Heche Marriage

Ellen Degeneres' former gay lover turned straight is going to be single again... and poker may be part of the reason.

In recent court documents, actress Anne Heche claims that her marriage to fellow actor Coleman 'Coley' Laffoon fell appart due to his excessive ping pong, poker, and porn habits.

Ping pong, poker, and porn... oh my! Perhaps he was under the impression that marrying a bi-sexual leading lady would result in night after night of hot threesomes and when that fantasy didn't materialize he chose the next best thing: poker and porn.

Normally I could care less about the celebrity breakups, but this one is significant. Anne can't decide whether she is gay or straight, so the newly single starlet is open game for everybody!!! ... well, everbody except us poker playing porn surfers. Apparently Anne doesn't like that.

Turncoat MFers Make Deal to Fry Ex-Chiefs

In exchange for their souls, BetOnSports.com executives made arrangements for the company to plead guilty to illegal gambling and other charges.

U.S. prosecuters have allegedly made a deal not to persue further personal charges against any other executives of the company. In exchange for the no further arrest guarantee, BoS apparently has agreed to testify against company founder Stephen Kaplan and fired CEO David Carruthers.

Carruthers was fired after he was arrested on gambling, rackateering, and money laundering charges. The company fired him for being unable to complete his job while being incarsarated.

Company founder, Stephen Kaplan (pictured above), was in court again yesterday. Prosecuters claim that the multi-millionaire was planning to avoid charges by fleeing to a country that would not extradite him.

In court Friday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Fagan said that when Kaplan was arrested in March in the Dominican Republic, he had a handcuff key and five passports with his picture, some with different names, places of birth or other information. Kaplan also carried large sums of cash from four countries where extradition is difficult or impossible, Fagan said, referring to an FBI agent's affidavit.

Fagan also said Kaplan had a plan, detailed in a spiral notebook, to win diplomatic protection and asylum in Nicaragua.

Kaplan also has $107 million in assets outside the U.S. and controls multiple bank accounts, Fagan said.

Kaplan's father-in-law, Warren Hoeffner, said Kaplan thought he could legally run a gambling business outside the U.S.
